Blended Learning

Fifty years of education research has confirmed what many of us know: students learn in different ways and at different paces.

A textbook may communicate a concept to some children adequately, while a hands-on demonstration works for others. Blended learning leverages technology to empower teachers to customize an educational plan and its pacing for each student?s unique needs while tracking their mastery. Teachers can then focus their traditional classroom instruction on individuals and small-groups, producing special lesson plans based on real-time student results.

Students in a 5th grade class are doing math at their own pace with Oblige software. A visitor to the classroom noticed that one boy was doing math that was very advanced… actually trigonometry (mid-level high school math) and asked if he was working on 5th grade math. With a slightly mischievous look in his eyes he said, as if letting her in on a secret, “I think it’s sixth grade math.”

“As a teacher, my greatest challenge was figuring out how to adequately challenge and engage the brightest students, and how to adequately meet the needs of the students who needed more time and assistance, while keeping all students engaged and moving at a good pace. It was always triage and I was forced to generally teach to the middle. The brightest students were often bored, and the students that needed the most help often fell behind and struggled. With blended learning, teachers can really and truly meet the needs of each child and reach them where they are. This was always the goal, but until now, the tools simply weren’t there.
